CYT shows are appropriate for the entire family and are an excellent way to introduce children to the arts!

Each CYT Chicago Chapter produces one Broadway-style musical each session. Enrollment in CYT classes provides students (ages 8-18) the opportunity to audition for their Branch’s current production. Students not cast in the show are encouraged to participate in other ways. Depending on age and ability, students (and siblings) can participate on the backstage crew, technical team, or the costume and makeup committees.

The stage is not only a world apart, it is a myriad of worlds, and in those worlds a man can have anything he fancies, if only he believes in what he sees.

Auditions

Students enrolled in CYT classes are invited to audition for their Branch's current production. Auditions typically consist of a one-minute song performed for the Artistic Team, with the possibility to learn and perform a short dance routine. The audition process may also include a “callback” in which a student may be asked to read for a speaking role in the play.  Auditions are a wonderful way for students to gain self-confidence and to show the best of their talents!

Parent Production Teams

Parents are the backbone of CYT! Without them, CYT would not be the family-oriented organization that it is and could not produce the high-quality community shows that it does.

At least one parent of each student cast in the production must serve on a CYT Production Team. Options include, but are not limited to: costumes, refreshments, props, greenroom, backstage, public relations, sets, technical, make-up, programs, and house management.

School Day Performances

CYT Chicago is one of the most respected children’s theater companies in Northeastern Illinois and Southeastern Wisconsin, producing 30 family-friendly productions starring students ages 8-18 every year. Literature from the classroom comes to life on stage in quality productions with colorful costumes, professional staging, energetic choreography, and singing, paired with optional curriculum guides to help tie into the state educational standards.

CYT School Day performances are designed specifically for elementary and middle school classes. The school day shows are typically only 90 minutes in duration. Last year, over 40,000 students attended our productions. Space is limited, so reserve your tickets today.

Scout Tours

CYT Chicago’s ever popular Scout Tours are the perfect outing for you and your troop. Over 1,000 Scouts and Leaders joined us last season alone. Learn how everything runs behind the curtain with a backstage tour, meet the cast, receive an exclusive CYT fun patch and more. Come experience the magic of theater!

Backstage Crew and Tech

The backstage crew and tech teams are the "magic" that make a show happen! Members of our crew have the ability to learn sound, lights, running projections, and backstage crew where you are moving sets on and off the stage for scene changes. Our stage managers for each production are often seasoned crew kids that found their passion in running these technical aspects of the show. Some of our CYT kids are now real life stage managers in the professional world! Check out our current list of classes to see if there is a tech class offering near you or simply join one of our shows as crew to start learning how it all works!

Theatre is the celebration of every moment as it is happening, and it is the job of the director to get every actor to play each moment fully whilst ensuring that once played each moment is also let go.
