Class Description

The fundamentals of Jazz Dance are found in many other styles including Musical Theatre, making this class necessary for any aspiring dancer or actor. Jazz dance often utilizes modern music and features syncopated movements, energetic choreography, and complex patterns. In addition, most musicals feature a dance ensemble that is tasked with telling part of the story through dance. Students will be encouraged to demonstrate the foundational elements of jazz dance featuring music from Broadway musicals to be performed at the end of class Showcase production.

There will be no class on April 18.

Sophie Murk

Sophie Murk grew up participating in CYT shows, classes, and camps, and she quickly was bitten by that ruthless theatre bug. She graduated with a BFA in Musical Theatre from Webster Conservatory in the spring of 2018. In addition to her technical training and professional acting experience, she has spent the bulk of her last four years looking for ways to make theatre more intentional, collaborative, and accessible to the people who need it most. She is a certified artistic fellow for Artists Striving to End Poverty, and she founded and served as president of her school's own chapter of ASTEP. You may have seen Sophie at CYT camps over the summer (her favorite place in the world)! Nothing excites her more than the thought of getting to work on the art form she loves with the amazing kids at CYT throughout the year now as well!
